Unitree Robotics
China · founded 2016
Why this status
FCC Restriction. On July 29, 2026, the FCC restricted new imports of foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots — a rule an interagency national-security review found necessary over supply-chain and cybersecurity risk. Unitree was named specifically: researchers had identified a backdoor in its robots, with some units found transmitting data back to servers in China without the owner's knowledge.
The restriction is not a blanket ban: it applies to new imports of models not yet FCC-authorized. Units already purchased, and models with existing FCC equipment authorization, are unaffected; federal government purchases are exempt; and a manufacturer can seek approval through a Department of War or Department of Homeland Security waiver.
What the rule actually covers
In scope
New imports of foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots without prior FCC equipment authorization, plus connected power inverters from named suppliers. Framed as country-neutral, but China supplies an estimated 80–90% of global humanoid shipments the rule effectively reaches.
Not in scope
Robots already owned or already FCC-authorized; software updates to existing authorized units, which can still get approval; and any purchase made by the federal government, which is exempt outright.
How the parties involved describe it
U.S. Government
The interagency body behind the rule says the covered devices "pose unacceptable risks to the national security of the United States," citing supply-chain vulnerabilities and cybersecurity exposure in critical infrastructure.
Unitree
Unitree has publicly downplayed the restriction's effect on its current product line, while Chinese state media coverage has separately argued the barriers won't erase the company's competitiveness even as it flags risk to future U.S. sales.
