VR shipments keep sliding as AR glasses post triple-digit growth
Meta holds 58% of the XR headset market, but the real story is the split: VR headset shipments fell 17% year-over-year while AR smart glasses grew 136%, as the category shifts toward lightweight, everyday-wearable frames.

A market splitting in two directions
Counterpoint Research's quarterly XR (AR & VR headsets) market-share tracker, covering Q1 2026 and published June 4, 2026, shows a category moving in opposite directions depending on the form factor. Global VR headset shipments fell 17% year-over-year (and 39% quarter-over-quarter) in the first quarter, continuing a multi-quarter slide for the standalone-headset segment. Over the same window, global shipments of AR smart glasses increased 136% year-over-year — even as they dipped 23% quarter-over-quarter off a strong holiday period, the annual comparison shows the fastest-growing corner of the wider XR category by a wide margin.
The two trend lines aren't unrelated. As lighter, display-integrated and display-less smart glasses become viable everyday-wear devices, they're pulling both attention and purchase intent away from bulkier, headset-style VR devices that require a dedicated "put it on to use it" occasion — a shift Counterpoint's report frames as the defining dynamic of the XR category heading into the back half of 2026.
Meta still leads, but the ground is shifting
Meta holds 58% of the global XR headset market — but the growth is happening in the segment it doesn't dominate as completely.
Meta remains the largest single player across the combined XR headset market, with a 58% share in Q1 2026 per Counterpoint's tracker — a position built primarily on Quest-line VR/MR headset volume. That dominance in headsets sits alongside a separate and faster-moving fight over smart glasses, where Meta's Ray-Ban partnership products have been a major driver of the category's growth but face an increasingly crowded field of AR and display-less glasses entrants competing for the same lightweight-wearable use case.

Where this fits on unit.report
What this entry is not: it is not a forecast produced by unit.report, and it does not change any manufacturer's status on the Compliance Tracker. It is a record of the Q1 2026 shipment figures Counterpoint Research published, with figures attributed and sourced.
Once confirmed, this record is not silently rewritten. A later development becomes a new, separately dated entry. Spotted an error? See our correction policy.
